      New Commissioner
resists ID Card arguments

Elizabeth France's successor as Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, has signalled his scepticism about "national identity cards".  While he confirms that he has "not yet taken a personal position for or against" the Government' Entitlement Card scheme, he expressed clear doubts about it usefulness and effectiveness - read full report in The Guardian.  It is SoCLA's position that no overriding public requirement has been demonstrated for such cards: see Policy.
