Political Top TenJune 2002 I have conceived a new game. And I want you to play it. It's not like Fantasy Football. In fact, it is not fantasy at all. It merely requires you to place in order of priority, the Top Ten issues confronting the UK Government. My table reflects a UK assessment, although I suspect that the order would not be decisively different for other European countries. It would be interesting to attract other-country assessments, including the United States. This is my own selection, reflecting my own assessment of the democratic electoral scene - these are the subjects which I think are occupying people's minds, which are therefore critical to the democratic political agenda - let me know what you think
These reflect, inevitably, my particular view of the subjective nature of modern politics, as set out in Multiple Differential Uncertainty that 1992 Essay which still informs much of my thinking. Having said that, I am sure that there is - as compared with June 2202 - a heightened anxiety about the world order, crime and civic order and immigration. What would your Top Ten be? If you let me know, I will publish, right
2 September 2003 Am I a US target?
Caerphilly, Monday 1 September 2003 Good evening Roger From my reading of a number of US websites regarding the way the US Department of Defense and the FBI are monitoring any form of dissent, I'm not too surprised you have come to their attention. Also, a number of recent articles in Guardian Unlimited have drawn attention to visits by FBI agents to US citizens who have merely voiced, in public and their work-place, criticism of the Bush regime. Let's hope they don't get our Intelligence Services knocking you up in the early hours of the morning. Which does remind me of my student-days, and writing for the student rag. I was active in The National Council for Civil Liberties (now Liberty). I did a piece on the Police National Computer at Hendon, commenting on the fact that it contained 'knowledge' and 'factual information' on individuals who did not have criminal records - in passing I did comment on some of the files held by our Intelligence Services with reference to some of the leaks that were appearing at that time. Needless to say, I got an early morning call from a number of individuals wanting to know where I got the information for the article. I referred them to Police News... Keep up the dissenting. It has a long and honourable history. Regards, Peter (Peter FitzGerald, Solicitor, of Caerphilly) P.S. Heard your snippet on the radio on Sunday night (Westminster Hour) regarding your views on 'grey power' and pensioner revolt – and the impossibility of mobilising a distinctive “pensioner vote”. The following morning Radio Wales ran with the same theme and used the same taped interviews but – alas - ignored your contribution because, I guess, it was a dissenting view from the line were taking... What do you think? Drop me a line
