item0068B 982, 983 982 15 April 2004 To the Letters Editor, The Guardian
Dear Sir
Yet as mere “Occupying Powers”, the US/UK Coalition cannot legally change the underlying legal structures of Iraq. These “great contracts” (for oil production, providing public utilities, telecommunications) can be signed only by a “sovereign” Iraqi Government. That is an iron rule of international contract law which no Court, and no company, can buck. Without valid “sovereign” signatures, the position of the US corporations would be deeply flawed, and open to constant legal challenge. And it is clear that no democratically-elected Government of Iraq could possibly sign them, given prevailing Iraqi attitudes. That is the real reason why Bush must have a period of puppet government, before elections are held. The dark deeds will not take long. My guess is that these contracts will all be signed within the first fourteen days of the puppet government’s life. By the time democracy is permitted, these legal commitments will be a done deal, a fait accompli. Hallo again from Australia, land of multicultural success. The key to making a success of multiculturalism is to talk about it a lot, but leave the door open to assimilation. Older immigrants love their “old country” - not enough to actually live there of course, but they do so love it. The young want to be Brits/European. The question is: How can the State help the young? The first problem (which we do not have here in Oz) is the insufferable class attitudes of lots of Brits. Solving this is an individual and personal step to be taken by each of you. Make the effort, chaps, will you please? This endless 'looking down' on others is a huge waste of emotional resources in Britain, and is delaying your next magnificent and serious historical role - Yep! - as the leaders of a united Europe. The only possible leaders of Europe are Britain or Germany. Germany wants the job, but about 20 of the other countries want Britain to have it – still a reflection of the events of 1939-45. But you can't do it effectively until you have cunningly absorbed the non-British Brits.
Squeeze Islam in
Britain,
just like the Whigs squeezed the Catholics to modernise, and behave, between
1689 and 1827. As a Catholic myself, I am happy to admit that the Catholics
were on the wrong side of the socio-political argument during those years.
Nothing, I repeat, nothing is better for the common man than Parliaments
and the rule of laws passed by Parliaments. Din this into the heads of the
British Muslims, and expel those who resist. Close their papers and radio
stations and ignore the twaddle about 'threats to freedom'. Anyone who
ever says “Britain is a threat to freedom” is clearly having a nervous
breakdown and should be sent to a rest home. No Muslim in
Australia
would dare attack Parliament here or the fundamental system based on it.
Put a big effort into filling the Army (not the Police) with ethnic
minority servicemen and women. Do not exclude the mainstream Brits by any
means, but make a special big effort towards the non-British Brits. The
British Army and the Royal Marines are still big-time and impressive. The
psychological impact on the non-British Brits of the Trooping of the
Colour and Remembrance Day being presented with 75%
ethnic-minority troops would do more for national identification by these
com munities than a thousand silly Islington ideas from David Blunkett.
That's enough for now chaps. Get on with it!
Mike Davis
